According to MSNBC, a crude car bomb was discovered in an abandoned SUV in Times Square yesterday evening:

Police found an "amateurish" but potentially powerful bomb in a smoking sport utility vehicle in Times Square, then cleared the streets of thousands of tourists milling through the landmark district so they could dismantle it, authorities said Sunday.
Investigators removed three propane tanks, consumer-grade fireworks, two filled 5-gallon gasoline containers, and two clocks with batteries, electrical wire and other components, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.
A black metal box resembling a gun locker was also recovered.
"I think the intent was to cause a significant ball of fire," Kelly said.
Bloomberg called the explosive device "amateurish" but potentially deadly, noting: "We are very lucky."
As of now, police have no suspects, since the plates didn't match the vehicle--the person the plates were registered to had recently sent them to the junkyard. Governor Paterson called the incident "an act of terrorism."
The person who did this obviously didn't give a damn how many innocent people would have been harmed or killed if the pipe bomb had actually exploded. It's truly frightening to think about the number of similar incidents that have occurred in recent months, such as the recent incident involving Hutaree or the deceased man in Maine who had components for making a dirty bomb in his house--eventually, some of these loonies are going to kill a lot of innocent people.
Sorry for such a short diary, but I hadn't seen another diary on this incident--and at this point, there's not a lot of information. We can only speculate, at this point, who may have been responsible--I just hope the nutjob(s) are caught before they manage to actually pull a terrorist attack off.
